This amazing class for expectant parents and caregivers is taught by our Neonatal Nurse Practitioner/Lactation Consultant and our Babywearing Educator/Lactation Counselor/Car Seat Tech.

Your registration includes you and one support person of your choosing.

We have two versions of this class- one for pregnant parent/s and one for those who are planning to foster or adopt.

Curriculum

Newborn Care

Learners will gain in depth evidence-based information about newborns. You'll learn about newborn appearance, how to care for their skin, hair, nails, and any common issues. This portion of the class will help you in being able to determine what is "normal" and expected and what may be something of concern.

Our 30+ year experienced baby whisperer and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will teach you her secrets and methods in how to hold, bathe, diaper, dress, swaddle, and soothe your baby. You'll practice all of these skills with your own demonstration baby so you feel confident in your skills.

Feeding

For those taking the course for pregnant students, the course will cover the benefits of breastfeeding, recognizing a great latch, how to know if baby is getting enough milk, pumping, breastfeeding when you are returning to work, troubleshooting breastfeeding issues, nursing in public, babywearing while breastfeeding, bottle feeding the breastfed baby, pumping basics, finding local resources and support, and what partners and support people can do to support breastfeeding. Other methods and topics related to feeding will also be discussed such as combination feeding, formula selection and preparation, and more!

For the foster/adoptive learners, the course will focus on bottle feeding, formula selection, donor milk, feeding preemies and other babies with special needs, healthy sleep, navigating the NICU, facilitating attachment and boding, skin to skin, and more! If any learners are interested in inducing lactation, we are happy to touch on this subject.

Babywearing

Our Certified Babywearing Specialist will cover the essentials of selecting and using an appropriate carrier for a newborn and how to wear safely during the vital and sensitive phase of development. Parents will learn about the many amazing benefits to babywearing and the instructor will simplify the use of these seemingly complicated products so that they are no longer intimidating. Students will be able to try on all major styles of carriers and are encouraged to bring carriers they already have to learn with.

Safety

Driving is the most dangerous thing we do with our babies, so our Child Passenger Safety Technician will teach new caregivers everything they need to know about selecting a car seat, risks and dangerous of improper use, current best practices, car seats that will be needed as the baby grows, how to secure the baby safely every time, and tips for proper installation. If you'd like, we'll install your car seat right after the class. It's included in your class fee! (a $30 value!)

Students will also learn Infant CPR (non certifying) so they can assist their child in an emergency.

Throughout the course you will also learn about SIDS risk reduction, babywearing safety, identifying signs of distress in your baby, and many other safety related topics.
